Where the Wild Roses Grow.

Where the Wild Roses Grow - Nick Cave w/ Kylie Minogue

Nick Cave was inspired to write "Where the Wild Roses Grow" after listening to the traditional song, "The Willow Garden", a tale of a man courting a woman and killing her while they are out together.

"The Willow Garden"

Down in the willow garden
Where me and my love did meet
It was there we sat a courting
My love fell off to sleep
I had a bottle of the burgundy wine
Which my true love she did not know
And there I poisoned that dear little girl
Down on the banks below

I drew my sabre through her
It was a bloody knife
I threw her in the river
It was a dreadful sight
My father often told me
That money would set me free
If I did murder that dear little girl
Whose name was Rose Connely

And now he sits in his own cabin door
A-wiping his tear-dimmed eye
Looking at his only son
On yonder scaffold high
My race is run beneath the sun
The devil is waiting for me
For I did murder that dear little girl
Whose name was Rose Connely
